When Should You Repair Damaged Landscape Masonry?
Stonework rarely fails all at once. It sends warnings — and catching them early is the difference between a half-day reset and a full rebuild. Here is how to read what your edging, walkway or steps are telling you.
Fix it now
- Rocking or loose pavers. Trip hazard, and every freeze-thaw cycle makes it worse.
- Water pooling against the house. Settled masonry directing water toward the foundation is urgent.
- Crumbling mortar on steps. Water gets in, freezes, and pops more mortar each winter.
Watch it
- Slight settling in one spot. Monitor through a season; often stable.
- Faded polymeric sand. Cosmetic until weeds take hold — then it becomes structural.
- Minor edge shifting. Normal in the first year; re-set if it continues.
What repairs involve
Most small repairs follow the same pattern: lift the affected units, correct the base, re-bed, reset level, sweep joints, clean up. A competent crew finishes typical walkway touch-ups in a day.
Inspection checklist
- Walk the property after heavy rain — where does water sit?
- Test pavers for rocking with your foot
- Check step mortar joints each spring
- Look for edging that has migrated or tipped
