Sod Installation in New Jersey: What Homeowners Should Know
Fresh sod is the fastest way from a tired lawn to a great one — but only if the prep is right. In Bergen County’s clay-heavy soils, most sod failures trace back to skipped steps before the first roll goes down. Here is what a proper job looks like.
When to install
Early fall (September) is ideal in New Jersey: warm soil, cool air, and fewer weeds competing. Spring (late April–May) is the second choice. Summer installs work but demand disciplined watering.
What grass type?
Most NJ sod is a Kentucky bluegrass blend, sometimes with perennial ryegrass and fine fescue mixed in. It suits our climate well. For deep shade, talk about shade-tolerant options before ordering — no grass thrives in full shade.
What the prep must include
- Old turf and weeds stripped or killed off
- Soil loosened 4–6 inches deep
- Grading for drainage — water must flow away from the house
- Starter fertilizer worked in
- Sod laid same-day it arrives, seams tight, rolled and watered immediately
After installation
Water daily for the first two weeks (twice daily in heat), then taper. Avoid mowing until the sod resists a gentle tug — usually 2–3 weeks. That first month decides everything.
