How to Water and Care for New Sod After Installation

The sod is down, the seams are tight, and the first watering is soaking in. Now comes the part most people get wrong: the first month. New sod has no root system yet — it is living off stored energy and your hose. Here is the schedule.

Weeks 1–2: keep it consistently moist

Water daily, enough to keep the sod and the top inch of soil damp — not flooded. In summer heat, split it into morning and late-afternoon sessions. Lift a corner: the underside should be moist, never dry or soggy.

Weeks 3–4: taper and test

Cut back to every other day, watering deeper each time to pull roots downward. Test rooting with a gentle tug on a corner — resistance means roots are knitting in.

After week 4: normal lawn care begins

Shift to deep, infrequent watering (about an inch per week total). Mow once the grass hits 3.5–4 inches, taking no more than a third off, with a sharp blade.

Mistakes that kill new sod

  • Underwatering in week one. The #1 killer. When in doubt, water.
  • Mowing too soon or too short. Wait for rooting; keep the first cuts high.
  • Foot traffic. Stay off it for two weeks except to water.
  • Fertilizing too early. The starter fertilizer at install is enough for 6–8 weeks.
