A Homeowner’s Guide to Preparing a Yard for Spring

Spring in Bergen County arrives all at once — and the yards that look great in June are the ones that got attention in March and April. Here is the sequence that sets up your whole season.

March: the reset

As soon as the snow is gone: pick up branches and winter debris, cut back dead perennial foliage, and edge the beds. This is also the moment for a spring cleanup visit — getting it done early means the crew is available before the rush.

April: beds and mulch

Once soil hits the mid-50s, refresh mulch and redefine edges. Prune summer-blooming shrubs now; leave spring bloomers alone until after they flower. Rake out matted leaves from beds before mulching.

May: lawn launch

First mow high (3.5–4 inches), sharpen the blade, and start the regular mowing rhythm. Overseed thin spots now while spring rain helps germination. Edge walkways for the crisp look that carries all summer.
